The National Weather Service out of Tulsa has issued a potentially dangerous heat advisory for Thursday and Friday although the Arklahoma region gave get some respite with potential thunderstorms moving into the area on Thursday night.

The Heat Index has to remain at or above 100 degrees for a minimum of two hours in order for the weather event to prompt a heat advisory warning.

Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year and even more heat-related illnesses.

Afternoon heat indices over portions of the region are expected to climb into the 100 to 105-degree range Thursday and Friday.

Some relief from the heat is expected with a front for the weekend.

A weak upper disturbance will bring a chance of storms to portions of northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas Thursday night.

A frontal boundary will bring better chances for thunderstorms over much of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas on Friday and Saturday, with chances shifting down toward the Red River valley on Sunday.

During heat advisory conditions the National Weather Service advises:

• Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.

• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

• Eat small meals and eat more often.

• Avoid extreme temperature changes.

• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.

• Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

• Postpone outdoor games and activities.

• Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.

• Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.

• Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

• Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
