FORT SMITH - One person is dead after a car allegedly fleeing police overturned on its’ top after crashing into a pickup truck near the intersection of Zero Street and Massard Road.
“On Friday, March 2nd, at approximately 1:40am, Officers with the Fort Smith Police Department observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. The Officer turned around and attempted to stop the vehicle, yet the vehicle would not stop when the Officer activated the emergency blue lights and siren.” Lt. Wes Milam said in a statement. “The vehicle never traveled over the speed limit yet was driving very erratically, at one point leaving the roadway on the north side of Zero Street before returning to the roadway. As the fleeing vehicle passed the Links Apartments, it accelerated rapidly away from the Officers’ vehicle. When the vehicle approached the intersection of Zero Street and Massard Road, the vehicle encountered a truck traveling westbound. The truck attempted to swerve out of the way and avoid the collision, but the fleeing vehicle veered suddenly, colliding with the truck head on.”
Milam went on to say that the Fort Smith Police Department officers who were attempting to stop the vehicle at the time of the collision have been put on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
