VAN BUREN– The Van Buren Police Department announced today that one of their School Resource Officers is the winner of the 2019 Children’s Champion Award by the Arkansas State Parent Teacher Association.
Cpl. George Edelen was nominated for this award by a teacher at Butterfield Trail Middle School. Cpl. Edelen has been with the Van Buren Police Department since January of 2012, and has been a School Resource Officer at Butterfield Trail Middle School since August of 2016.
“He has a way of talking about tough issues but still shows respect to the students, which is critical in order to earn their trust,” stated Johnny Williams, Assistant Principal at Butterfield Trail Middle School.
Cpl. Edelen was nominated for this award due to the work that he does to support kids and teachers in the school district.
Some of the things listed in the nomination are coaching gymnastics, leading the Van Buren Police Department Youth Citizen’s Police Academy, giving presentations to students, taking students to lunch as a reward, starting the “Wiggle Dance” in Van Buren Schools, cooking meals for teachers, passing out hams with the SRO division at Christmas, and various other volunteer events.
Cpl. Edelen can be seen doing the wiggle dance on YouTube with local elementary students who look like they are having a blast!
“We are proud to have people like George Edelen working for us and investing in the lives of students in Van Buren,” said Sgt. Jonathan Wear of the Van Buren Police Department.
