FORT SMITH – An unlicensed driver was behind the wheel of a car that hit a Fort Smith transit bus last week, a report from investigators revealed on Tuesday.

Officers stated in the official police report that they arrived to find a green Honda Accord in the roadway, having struck a transit bus that was burning at the corner of Jenny Lind and Zero Street. The driver, 20-year-old Deshon Smith and passengers aboard the bus were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

Smith told investigators that a car behind him was following close enough that he was forced to speed up in hopes of pulling away. He then said he was unable to stop before he struck the bus.

No charges have been filed in the incident.
