FORT SMITH – It will soon cost more to park in downtown Fort Smith if the action taken by the city board continues its current progression. If the second and third readings are also approved, the new rules will double the parking rates on Garrison Avenue, and significantly raise them on surrounding streets and in a municipal lot along 8th Street.
The second and third readings are required because there was not a five-member majority when the vote was taken. The board had tabled the motion at a previous meeting because the full council was not in attendance.
Part of the ordinance will be to install new parking meters that will allow you to pay with your smartphone.
